Elgon County incumbent MP Ignatius Mudimi Wamakuyu has officially been nominated to contest the 2026 parliamentary elections as an independent candidate after losing the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party flag to newcomer Moses Masa in the recent party primaries.
Speaking shortly after his nomination, Mudimi stressed that his decision to run independently is protected under the Constitution, not party rules.
“Independent candidature is guaranteed by the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, not a party issue. I am standing here because of the Constitution, not the party. We shall discuss party matters later,” he said.
Mudimi, who has represented Elgon County since 2021 and the larger Bulambuli area since 2026, expressed dissatisfaction with the NRM primaries.
He said the process left many party members frustrated and disappointed.
The legislator’s move adds a competitive twist to the Elgon County race, signaling a potential split in NRM support in the constituency and setting the stage for a closely watched contest in the 2026 elections.
